Interview Gold

As I was reflecting on the great things I learned this week, I am just so grateful.  And I guess since next week is Thanksgiving it is appropriately timed, but I want to share some of the grateful thoughts I had this week.  This week as I conducted my entrepreneurial interview, I reflected on what a valuable experience this interview is to me and how grateful I am for the assignment and opportunity to bring my education into my life.  As I spoke with Kim Bensen this week about her experiences as an entrepreneur I realized that sometimes life just takes us where we need to go.  In Kim's case her business just kind of came to her as she made her life better and had a desire to make other's lives better.  She told me the most rewarding part of her job is getting to celebrate the victories of her customers.  She said her customers are like an extension of her family and as I talked to a cook and watched her interact with a customer I could see this was true.  I love it that she built a business that seeks to better other people (through weight loss and healthy eating).  I love that she was educated and prepared to help other people, it made me think of the scripture in D&C 121:46 which I applied to her little business dominion that "without compulsory means it shall flow unto thee forever."  It seems like she has been lead to her life's work and it meats her needs financially, emotionally and otherwise.  She has been blessed and in return is a blessing to others.  My life's work to this point has been centered around my family and the gospel of Jesus Christ, which are both very fulfilling to me.  I really don't need more, but I have been drawn to finish my education and I hope that somehow in the path that lies before me, I will be led to use that education to bless the lives of others.  I know we all have work to do and it is specific to us in the use of our talents, things we need to learn, service we can give, etc.  I know God loves us all, and I hope I can listen well enough and apply His teachings to my life in such a way that I can be an extension of His hands.

This week the things that inspired me most about my entrepreneurial class was a talk by Sherri Dew, titled, " True blue, through and through ."  This talk was given originally as a BYUI devotional in March 2004.  Sherri Dew talks about integrity and how it is a virtue that will make you or break you.  I absolutely agree.  Integrity in all phases of life is so important.  We have to trust our husband or wife to make a successful marriage, they have to trust us.  In a business relationship a customer trusts the maker of the product, that it will work as advertised and be worth the investment.  Even in our communities, we trust that people will drive safely, keep the laws of the land and pay their taxes.  Without trust our world wouldn't function.  I particularly enjoyed the story she told of growing up in Kansas and driving the fully loaded grain truck.  She had one stop sign to stop at, but Kansas is very flat, and you can see in every di...

Keywords, keywords, keywords....

 I have always felt words were important. And I have always liked "precision of language", in fact I hate it when language gets butchered. I was always tickled pink when my two year old son popped out a rather large word completely in context! So I have always loved words. The words we use are important. I had never ever considered what goes into a keyword before this week.  I have probably searched on the internet every day for many years, and still have never given it a thought. My fingers just spewing out the words of random people and things.... Keywords are also special. They can be broad, concise, vague, specific, gestalt and laser focused. So not only are the single words important, but the small combinations even more so. The words I started with this week were very broad, spot on, but broad. ADvertising - Defining moments

 This week as I focused on putting together ads for my blog, I had a hard time and almost a complete reset of what I am doing. The process of putting together these ads caused me to reflect and really define what my site is all about. I thought I already had these ideas firmly cemented in my mind. But honestly, each new step in this process has opened up more ideas and more possibilities to me and the act of putting it into words almost made me want a do over! One of the reading materials this week talked about highlighting what makes you unique. I honestly had a hard time defining that uniqueness. Everyone and their grandma sews! I have thought so many times that a sewing business would never work because the time involved in quality and creativity would drive the price of the finished product too high. No one would be willing to pay me $20/hour to make them a quilt + materials....to make them anything + materials. The costs are just too high- you can buy crap on amazon way too ch...
